Following appointment by the King the Governor-General, always an Australian, assumes that role as our effective head of state and Commander in Chief. Our system is different from most others. We have a Head of Government in the Prime Minister who exercises administrative control and a Governor-General who is more like a benevolent Trustee, well above politics.

    His Excellency General the Honourable David John Hurley AC DSC (Retd)
    has not been appointed in accordance with the letters patent. The Governor General MUST be a british subject as are all members of the Commonwealth of Australia as defined in the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution act 1901 as proclaimed and gazetted.
    On the 2nd February the Governor General was put in place using the sign manual but not the signet, no signet no Governor General.
